Kanjian signs Musical·AI deal for training on its catalogue

We’ve written a lot about music rightsholders and their representative bodies telling the GenAI industry not to train on their catalogues without permission. But now we may be hitting the stage where actual deals are signed and announced to license that training.

This week, for example, China-headquartered distributor and rights-licensing firm Kanjian has inked an agreement with startup Musical·AI. That’s the company (originally called Somms·ai) which launched its AI-focused rights platform in June this year, gathering music catalogues that were licensable for training purposes.

The company stressed that in the case of this week’s deal “unlike other catalogs, where additional opt-in from rights holders may be required, Kanjian’s collection is fully cleared for AI applications”. “This collaboration with Musical AI is a natural extension of the licensing infrastructure we’ve built over the last decade,” said Kanjian VP Tinko Georgiev.
